Recruitment

The engineer will provide support for the operational coordination of the MANTA Network project as a whole, and in particular for the organization of workcamps in Tunisia, Greece and Italy. This is a great opportunity to join the Centre Camille Jullian and the Institut d'archéologie méditerranéenne, and to become involved in an ambitious international training-through-research project.

Background

The Centre Camille Jullian and the Institute for Mediterranean archaeology (ARKAIA) are jointly leading the project "Megara, Aegina & Thaenae: a Mediterranean network of training field schools on ancient coastal cities" (MANTA Network), funded by the A*Midex Foundation until 2029. This project brings together three field operations already well established in the Mediterranean research panorama, with the aim of strengthening international cooperation and building an international training network led by AMU and its partners.

Situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, the three sites studied (Megara Hyblaea in Sicily, Thaenae in Tunisia and Aegina in Greece) offer the opportunity to address a wide range of issues over the long period of antiquity (8th c. BC - 5th c. AD).C.) a wide range of archaeological issues inherent to coastal cities, from an interdisciplinary perspective (land and underwater surveys and excavations, recording and surveying, study of furnishings, analysis of human, animal and plant remains, physico-chemical analyses...).

Training through Research will include annual field schools and laboratory workshops for undergraduate, masters and doctoral students from Aix-Marseille Université and partner universities in Tunisia, Italy and Greece. Several workshops and international colloquia will also be organized in France and abroad.

Mission

Reporting to the Director of the Centre Camille Jullian, and under the functional responsibility of the Scientific Manager of the MANTA Network project, the Director and Project manager of the ARKAIA Institute, as well as the scientific managers of the archaeological sites, the Design Engineer will support the operational coordination of the project in each of the planned actions.

His/her main activities will be as follows:

  • Participation in the overall coordination of the project and its workpackages (scientific, operational, administrative and budgetary follow-up);
  • Operational and logistical organization, and scientific and educational participation in archaeological operations (Tunisia, Italy, Greece);
  • Participation in the processing and enhancement of scientific data (post-excavation);
  • Planning and support for the organization of laboratory workshops in France and abroad;
  • Planning and support for workshops and symposia organized as part of the project;
  • Management and follow-up of external scientific and educational contributors, both French and foreign;
  • Planning incoming and outgoing mobility for students and staff, in collaboration with the Centre Camille Jullian's administrative and financial manager;
  • Production and distribution of communication documents via internal and external channels for the university, the Centre Camille Jullian and the ARKAIA institute;
  • Management of scientific and safety equipment related to field and laboratory activities.
