Founded in 2020, the Institute for Mediterranean archaeology (ARKAIA) is a focal point for research and training skills in archaeology and archaeosciences at Aix Marseille Université. It examines Mediterranean land and sea areas diachronically from prehistory to recent times, by combining the material and human resources of the archaeology laboratories at the Mediterranean centre for social sciences and humanities (MMSH) and the teams developing innovative approaches in biosciences, geosciences (paleoenvironments and paleoclimates, geochemistry, dating, etc.), biological anthropology, together with engineering science and technology (3D, acoustics, etc...). Today, the ARKAIA institute is the main contact for supporting and promoting the actions of its community internationally and in the socio-economic world.
